Sergej Engström

Doctoral Scientist

Sergej Engström is a PhD student supported by the Platt PhD Scholarship for Autism Research, and supervised by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Dr Carrie Allison and Dr Alex Tsompanidis. His PhD research focuses broadly on the relationship between autism and addiction and his research interests include population-level research using large-scale and register-based data, as well as understanding the mechanisms and potential causes underlying psychological and neurodevelopmental conditions. He is particularly interested in starting with the experiences and real-world challenges faced by autistic people, and using research to better understand the problems that matter to the autistic community, with the aim of ultimately improving clinical support.

Sergej is a licensed psychologist trained in Sweden at Stockholm University and also holds a BSc in Technology from KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Before starting his PhD, he worked clinically with children and adolescents in Sweden and conducted research on autism, ADHD, and mental health.
